£9000 BUS grant for homes with Oil and LPG across Gloucestershire
The government has recently announced a change to the current Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant, with an increase in funding for homes running on oil or LPG heating. Homes across Gloucestershire currently heating with Oil or LPG will receive an uplift of £1,500 to the current funding when using an MCS approved installer such as PBT Installations.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The government scheme is designed to help homeowners make the switch from traditional fossil fuelled heating methods to low-carbon alternatives such as air or ground source heat pumps. The scheme previously offered home owners on mains gas or inefficient direct electric heating up to £7,500 towards making the switch when using an MCS approved installer. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is scheduled to end on March 31st, 2028.
What has changed?
On 21 April 2026, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) announced an increase to the BUS grant specifically for homes and small businesses currently heated by oil or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The total grant value rises to £9,000 from July 2026 and is available until March 2027 -making it one of the most generous government incentives available for home heating upgrades.
This increase was driven directly by rising oil prices linked to geopolitical instability in the Middle East, which has hit off-gas-grid households particularly those in rural areas hardest. The government’s response is clear: help those most exposed to volatile fossil fuel prices make the switch to cleaner, more stable alternatives.
Who is eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The grant is available for homeowners and small business owners in England and Wales.
To be eligible, you’ll need to:
- Own your home or small business.
- Currently have a fossil fuel heating system (such as a gas boiler) or an electric heating system without a heat pump.
- Ensure your installer is certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). They also need to be a member of an approved consumer code such as the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) or HIES Consumer Code.
