What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is the UK government’s flagship grant for low-carbon heating. Administered by Ofgem and funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, it helps homeowners and small businesses in England and Wales replace fossil-fuel heating with a heat pump. The scheme is funded through to March 2028, so this is genuine, fully-backed money available now.

The grant pays:

• £7,500 towards an eligible air-source or ground-source heat pump.
• £9,000 for eligible off-gas-grid homes currently heated by oil or LPG — a temporary uplift available from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. This matters in Gloucestershire, where a large share of rural properties rely on oil or LPG.

You don’t apply for the grant yourself — your installer does, and the value is deducted directly from your bill. There’s no waiting for a rebate and no upfront outlay of the grant amount.

Who qualifies?

To be eligible, broadly you need to:

• Own the property (homeowner or private landlord), residential or small commercial.
• Be replacing an existing fossil-fuel or electric heating system in an existing building (not a new build).
• Hold a valid EPC — any rating, as the previous minimum insulation requirements were removed in May 2024.
• Not have previously received a BUS or RHI grant for a heat pump at the property.

A few things to note: hybrid systems (a gas boiler paired with a heat pump) are not eligible, and there’s a maximum system size of 45kWth, which covers the vast majority of homes. The grant covers the heat pump and core installation; additional works such as radiator upgrades, a new hot water cylinder or insulation are quoted separately.

One condition underpins everything: the installer must be MCS-certified. No certification, no grant. This is where your choice of installer matters more than most homeowners realise.
