MVHR

A Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery (MVHR) system is a type of ventilation commonly used in energy-efficient or low-energy homes and buildings to provide fresh air while optimising energy usage.

It works by extracting stale, humid air from areas like kitchens and bathrooms and bringing in fresh air from outside. At the same time, it recovers any heat from the outgoing air and uses it to warm the incoming fresh air. This helps reduce the need for additional heating, making the system energy efficient.

An MVHR system ensures a constant supply of fresh air all year round. This helps to prevent issues like dampness, mould and stale air, while minimising heat loss.

An MVHR unit is typically installed in a loft or utility space, and will be connected to a system of ducts leading to various rooms, depending on your requirements. The ducts and extraction vents are installed to carry stale air away from wet rooms like kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms, while supply vents bring fresh air into spaces such as bedrooms and living areas. The ducts are usually insulated to prevent heat loss and to minimise noise and need to be sized and installed in a way that allows balanced airflow throughout the building, ensuring proper air exchange and no pressure imbalances.

An MVHR unit is also a filter and therefore, the fresh air brought in from outside is removed of odours, pollution and allergens.
