A heat pump is the most efficient way to heat most homes. It replaces your oil, LPG or gas boiler with a system that collects free heat from the air or the ground, using electricity to turn it into heating and hot water. PBT Installations is an MCS-certified heat pump installer based in Cheltenham, designing and installing Stiebel Eltron systems across Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds.
Which heat pump is right for you?

Air source heat pumps
An outdoor unit takes heat from the air, even on cold winter days. Air source is the right choice for most homes: lower installation cost, no groundworks, and installation usually done within days.

Ground source heat pumps
Pipes buried in trenches or boreholes collect steady warmth from the ground. Ground source is the most efficient and quietest option, with no outdoor unit, and suits homes with land or a high heat demand.
Want cooling as well as heating? Air-to-air heat pumps provide air conditioning that can also heat individual rooms efficiently.
How a heat pump works
A heat pump works like a fridge in reverse. It collects low-grade heat from outside, concentrates it using a compressor and transfers it to your radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water cylinder.
Because it moves heat rather than burning fuel to make it, a well-designed system produces around three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses.
Grants and 0% VAT
Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, eligible homes in England and Wales can get £7,500 off an air source or ground source heat pump, or £9,000 if you’re off the gas grid and replacing an oil or LPG boiler. We make the application for you, and the grant comes straight off your quote.
Installations also qualify for 0% VAT, confirmed until March 2027. Read our grant guide.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is a low-carbon heating system that collects heat from the outside air or the ground and uses electricity to raise it to a useful temperature for heating and hot water. It replaces a conventional boiler.
Should I choose an air source or a ground source heat pump?
Air source suits most homes and costs less to install. Ground source is more efficient and quieter, with no outdoor unit, but needs space for trenches or a borehole and costs more upfront. We recommend the right option after surveying your home.
Will a heat pump work with my existing radiators?
Often, yes. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than boilers, so some radiators may need to be upsized to keep each room warm. Our heat loss survey shows exactly which rooms, if any, need changes.
Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Yes. Modern heat pumps are designed to heat homes through UK winters, including in freezing temperatures. Ground source systems are least affected by cold weather because the ground stays at a steady temperature all year.
What grants can I get?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump in England and Wales, or £9,000 for off-gas-grid homes replacing an oil or LPG boiler. Installations also qualify for 0% VAT. We handle the grant application for you.
Do heat pumps need servicing?
Yes. An annual service keeps your heat pump running efficiently and helps protect its warranty. We offer heat pump servicing for the systems we install.
